This wonderful client knew her front yard was a bit of an eyesore when driving into her neighborhood and she was ready to fix it. She wanted to have a modern style with drought tolerant plants. As we talked, she admitted that her first love is cottage gardens, but felt that was out of the question with California friendly plants. However, cottage style gardens are do-able with water wise plants. No problem. It has more to do with the way flowering plants are set in the garden. But a modern style is contradictory to cottage so the design combined both.
Site problems: a heavily dog-walked corner and all the problems to go along with that; a couple of brick planters were falling apart; driveway needed widening.
Client wants: all lawn out; new irrigation and lighting; fountain; modern design; colorful plantings to invite butterflies and hummingbirds; grasses for movement; keep existing concrete; fence around corner to keep dogs off yet be very open; pathway; trees out; widen driveway.
After - 3 weeks after planting
This is what we did:
Zig-zag fence built around the corner.
New dark gray brick set subway style widens driveway and step added.
"It's beautiful, Katie. I just love it!" I do, too. The salvias will bring in the hummingbirds and bring the wild color. Grevillea 'Long Johns' will anchor and bloom red. Sesleria autumnalis are well behaved grasses. And of course, succulents are always stunning!
